The Captain and Crew of the Sea Shepherd ship, M/Y Bob Barker were treated to a very special gift on their last weekend in port before heading out to the Southern Oceans Whale Sanctuary for Operation Divine Wind. Cellist Michael Goldschlager, currently in Hobart performing with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, stopped by the Bob Barker and played Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cello Suites. Sea Shepherd supporters in Hobart were able to listen to Michael’s wonderful performance while touring the ship. Not many would have guessed that they were listening to the same exact instrument that played for Marie Antoinette in the Court of Louis the XVI.

The Bob Barker’s Captain, Alex Cornelissen, is very pleased to announce that Michael has accepted an invitation to join the prestigious Sea Shepherd Board of Advisors. His musical accomplishments are phenomenal; Michael has played for the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, New York City Opera, New York City Ballet, the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, to name but a few. Michael is well known for performing as a principal cellist, as well as concerto soloist, at music festivals all over the world. He was also the cellist of the Macquarie Trio.

The image and sound of Michael playing on the bow of the Bob Barker will be with the crew as they sail south through the Roaring Forties. As waves crash down hard on the bow of the ship, the crew will listen to Bach, remembering the whales that have perished under the relentless violence of the Japanese whale poachers.

“Michael left me with a copy of his work as a world-class cellist. I agree with his words that it will bring us peace in times of turbulence - for turbulent waters are what we will encounter when we once again steer our ships into harm’s way,” said Captain Alex Cornelissen.
