Steve Irwin Films MacQuarie Island

The Steve Irwin passed MacQuarie Island enroute to the Ross Sea.

Helicopter pilot Chris Aultman flew over this beautiful island to get footage of the terrain, the penguins and the famous mossy bogs.

This island marks the halfway point between Hobart and the Ross Sea.

"Looking down on this beautiful island it's hard to imagine the horror that once occurred down there, the whaling, the sealing, the tossing of live Adelie penguins into boiling vats of oil to extract a half a litre of penguin oil. But it also reminds us that if Australia and New Zealand can evolve from nations that so ruthlessly slaughtered such innocent creatures than perhaps Japan can change also. Our fervent hope is that the savagery of illegal whaling is ended soon in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary," said Captain Paul Watson from on board the Steve Irwin.
