Engine Room Blog: Summer in the Southern Ocean
By David Nickarz
Summer means different things in different places. Everyone in Canada was jealous that I was going to Australia during the Northern Hemisphere winter. I am missing biting cold that reaches minus 35 Celsius in Winnipeg. The weather in Fremantle, Western Australia was well over 30 degrees Celsius most days. I enjoyed the weather somewhat, but had to adjust because of where I’m from. Now we are much further south and it’s getting cold again. The Antarctic ‘summer’ gets above zero, but can be minus 15 and very windy, feeling like minus 30.
So, to my friends and loved ones back in Winnipeg: yes, I am missing the worst of winter, but I’m catching a very cold summer here at the bottom of the world.
