Shutting Down Illegal Whaling
Shortly after we began chasing the Nisshin Maru, the whaling fleet showed that they were desperate to continue their criminal whaling operation. Just 12 hours had passed since we had latched on to the tail of the Nisshin Maru and the harpoon ships were already taking aggressive action to try and shake us. I was standing outside on the bow of the Bob Barker when I saw their highly maneuverable ships suddenly start closing in on us. They formed a tight counter-clockwise circle around our ship, cutting just 20 meters in front of our bow. Then, the Yushin Maru 3 suddenly turned in sharply, nearly towards where a few of us were standing on the bow. I could almost touch the rails of their ship as they rammed us. Our crew stood firm.
Despite the ramming to our 60-year old ship, the damage was relatively minor.
The hole they left in the side of our ship has been fixed and we haven’t seen the Yushin Maru 3 since the incident.
The Japanese whaling fleet is a multi-million dollar organized criminal operation that is financially and politically backed by the Japanese Government. There is little they won’t do for their greedy profits. The whalers are ruthlessly slaughtering the last of these giant, gentle creatures in what is supposed to be a whale sanctuary. They almost killed the six-crew members of the Ady Gil. And, within just a few hours of when we stopped their criminal whaling operation, they rammed our ship.
It’s now been a couple days that no whales have been killed in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. The harpoon ships are still chasing the Bob Barker and not the whales. The whales are safe and we’ll do everything we can to keep it that way.
