Engine Room Blog
by David Nickarz
Here I am, back in the Engine room for my fourth Antarctic Campaign. The whale poachers want to slaughter 50 endangered humpback whales in addition to their 850 Minkie and 50 endangered fin whales. That will be another quota they won't be meeting again this year.
They will also fall short of their profits again, and with some lobbying their fisheries agency won't continue to loan them money. The Antarctic could be a true refuge for the whales next year - the first time since a short break during World War II and since commercial whaling started here in the 19th century.
As much as I love coming down here and seeing the most beautiful and remote wilderness in the world, I can't keep doing it every year. It takes a toll on our volunteers.
