Sea Shepherd South Africa -- Get Involved!

We hope you will be a part of this exciting time of growth and development for Sea Shepherd in South Africa! Because Sea Shepherd is a growing international organization, we are looking for onshore volunteers all around the world to support our conservation work on the high seas! We need the following kinds of help:

  • Fundraising - Organize a fundraiser event or concert at your local pub, restaurant, or community meeting place; have a Sea Shepherd house party (show videos and give a presentation); help sell SSCS merchandise; tell your friends about our work!
  • Outreach - Assist in manning an information table (or host your own) at special events, festivals, outdoor markets, and/or shopping malls in your area. Be creative! Think of any place where you can set-up a display table and hand out information.
  • Education - Visit schools, universities, clubs, and/or organizations to give presentations on Sea Shepherd.
  • Information Distribution - You can help spread the word about our mission by distributing printed brochures, info sheets, and newsletters.
  • Administrative and clerical work to support the chapter's activities - You can help with telephone calls, answering mail, data entry, computer consultation, and translation work.
  • Networking - Finding contacts in SA  to provide the following support for the ship - services, parts, equipment, moorage, etc...
  • Developing a support network for Sea Shepherd in South Africa

Sea Shepherd Featured on South Africa's 50/50

50/50 is one of the most popular television programmes in South Africa and for over 20 years has reported on conservation efforts in South Africa and around the world.

Per the 50/50 website: 50/50 has influenced environmental policy, stirred the public against environmental injustice,s and promoted the work of dedicated conservationists and has helped to create a stronger awareness of conservation and environmental issues in South Africa

The voyage of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society vessel Farley Mowat was featured on 50/50 on February 12th in a show seen by millions of South Africans.

Founder and President of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society Captain Paul Watson was originally interviewed by Bart Smithers of BFT Productions for the programme in September of 2005 when he attended the Hermanus Whale Festival in Cape Town. The show also included interviews of the Farley Mowat crew when the ship reached port in Cape Town in early January of this year.

This program has greatly contributed to the awareness of people in South Africa to the issue of illegal whaling in the Southern Oceans of Antarctica.
