The Seed: A Vegan Experience, May 18-19, 2013
New York, NY
May 18 - 19, 2013
For the second year in a row, Sea Shepherd NYC joined The Seed: A Vegan Experience for a weekend of outreach, education, and fundraising. This vegan food festival and exposition hosts some of the top restaurants in New York City as well as small businesses and non-profits contributing to the protection of the natural world. Sea Shepherd eagerly accepted the invitation to be a part of this event again.
Aside from our merchandise and outreach table and meeting new volunteers, perhaps the best part of the event was the Operation Infinite Patience presentation on Sunday afternoon. Cove Guardian Leader Melissa Seghal and NYC-based Cove Guardians Ethan Wolf and Dayna Rozental provided an overview of this campaign and its importance. While Ethan provided a history of the dolphin slaughter and Sea Shepherd's campaign in Taiji, Japan, Dayna explained the connection between the dolphin drive and the capture of dolphins for captivity to be displayed in places like SeaWorld and swim with dolphin programs. Melissa then spoke of a dolphin slaughter during the 2012-2013 killing season in which four spotted dolphins were thrown into the dolphin killer skiffs to be transported to sea pens, only for one of these dolphins to be so injured that he or she was just thrown back into the killing cove to be slaughtered with the rest of the pod. There was a lively question and answer period afterward, during which many expressed interest in becoming Cove Guardians.
We look forward to future events with The Seed and future opportunities to present the vital ocean-defending work of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
