South By Southwest
SXSW is the largest music (film and interactive) festival of the year in the United States. This year, over 125,000 hotel rooms were booked in downtown Austin and nearly 2,000 bands played during the week-long festival.
Sea Shepherd worked with record label, Popantipop, to host three “Day Parties” (free parties which are open to the public with bands playing from noon to midnight) at Annie’s West in Austin. Over 60 bands played over the three days. Bands included She Wants Revenge, Saint Motel, Art. Vs. Science, and Data Rock.
Sea Shepherd CA volunteers Cameron Freels, Sarah Bullion, Erin Suggett, Linda Porta, and Martin took the trek from LA in the RV with LA Coordinator Grace Ko to sell the latest Sea Shepherd merchandise and form a street team to raise awareness for the party and for ocean conservation. Sea Shepherd Media Manager Katia Carter worked closely with Popantipop and all of the bands during the week, forming many new relationships oh behalf of Sea Shepherd.
We were able to raise thousands of dollars through merchandise and donations. Many of the bands have offered their time to play any benefit shows for Sea Shepherd in the future. We can’t wait to see these bands again!
