Griffith University Welcomes Captain Paul Watson

Griffith University Welcomes Captain Paul Watson

Gold Coast, Australia
March 1, 2007

Griffith University , Gold Coast, welcomed Captain Paul Watson with an enthusiastic standing ovation in a packed lecture hall. Over 250 people attended the seminar.

Introductions were made by Professor Mark Hero, School of Environment , who voiced his admiration for Paul Watson and Sea Shepherd's work, especially under such difficult conditions in the Antarctic Ocean .

Jonny Vasic , International Director of Sea Shepherd, introduced the DVD of the "Operation Leviathan" Campaign. He apologised for the length of his beard, stating that the furry covering on his face came in handy in the cold Antarctic, but needed radical trimming for our warm Queensland climate.

The audience viewed the DVD clips with enthusiasm, punctuating the thrilling scenes with cheers for our Sea Shepherd heroes. The sound track, including Mihirangi, made it even more exciting. Loud applause followed at the finish.

Captain Paul Watson entered the podium to loud clapping and cheers from an upstanding audience who came to see and hear one of the "Top Ten Eco-Warriors on the Planet" and a living legend in our time. Everyone listened intently to Captain Watson's lecture. A short question and answer period followed.

Directly after the seminar, the School of Environment provided refreshments in the patio area. This gave those attending an opportunity to meet and chat with Paul and also for media interviews.

Drinks and Dinner at the Southport Yacht Club

In the evening approximately 30 people arrived at the Southport Yacht Club for drinks and dinner where they could chat with Paul and Jonny. Everyone appeared to have a wonderful, noisy evening with our heroes.

Special thanks to Ruth Young, PHD Cand, Kerry Kriger, PHD, and Jodie Haig, PHD Cand, who helped me with tabling during Orientation Week at Griffith University during the prior week and obtaining the Lecture Hall. Thanks to all my Sea Shepherd crew, Kathleen, Nadia , Kent , and Joan, who gave up their time to volunteer for Orientation Week.
