Paul Watson receives an overwhelming welcome in Byron Bay, Australia

Over 300 people came out to hear Paul Watson speak at the Byron Bay Community Center. It was a great night of music and information. Some of Byron's best musicians were on hand to entertain the audience. Howie Cooke MC'ed the event and also preformed some original music.

Paul Watson and International Director Jonny Vasic spent two days in the Byron Bay area, where they were given heaps of media, both radio and TV coverage and did three interviews for environment shows at Bay FM, Byron's alternative radio.

The event was filmed by local filmmakers and recorded for Bay FM. People flocked around the stalls manned by Sea Shepherd volunteers to sign as up as members and to purchase Sea Shepherd merchandise and there was elbow room only during the Champaign supper held upstairs.

Well known local musicians Helen Rogerson, Yeshe and Greg Sheehan played during the event, the audience was visually moved with Hellen's song ‘Money for Whales' and both Yeshe and Greg who are international performers were given a warm reception.

One of the highlights of the evening was a speech by thirteen-year-old, Sky Bortoli who traveled from Newcastle to be present. Sky is of Aboriginal decent and recently donated prize money from a modeling competition to the whales. She has since raised her fare to attend next year's IWC meeting in Alaska, where she will protest their killing.

Another contributor to the evening was Howie Cook, international whale activist, artist, and a veteran of whale standings. Howie sang his protest songs and added humor to the evening with his irrepressible wit. Howie and the world's number one free surfer, Dave Rastovich who introduced Captain Watson, are the founders of Surfers for Cetaceans.

When people who attended the evening are asked what impacted them the most about Paul's talk they reply that it was his saying that we can all make a difference and take a stand for the planet, each of us in our own way.

Paul and the Sea Shepherd crew have been invited to drop anchor in Byron on their way home from the Antarctica campaign.
