Report from Taiji: November 11 (new video)

What a load of crap!

Coming off of the gutting bargeComing off of the gutting barge“The International Marine Animal Trainers' Association was founded to foster communication, professionalism, and cooperation among those who serve marine mammal science through training, public display, research, husbandry, conservation, and education. Specifically, IMATA recognizes its role and responsibilities to the continued existence of oceanaria, aquaria, and laboratories housing marine mammals.”

Every member of IMATA has bloody hands. Holding marine mammals in captivity for fun and profit is obscene and there is a direct link between the slaughters in Taiji and the captive industry. The parks in the US will tell you that the marine mammals in their custody are captive bred, but where did the parents originate? This is a horrid industry and it is time to put it out of the dolphins and other cetaceans’ misery. These molesters are holding their annual conference in Boston, MA (USA) December 3-8.  I am sure they would welcome seeing all of us there! There will be ample opportunity to obtain photographs of these molesters for the wall of shame.

Taking a breath after an epic battleTaking a breath after an epic battleThere was a battle today in the bay outside of the infamous cove in Taiji. For several hours, a pod of cetaceans fought valiantly against a merciless foe. Some members of the pod might have escaped, but in the end, all twelve who had been pushed into the Cove were slaughtered. The molesters who chased them down and cut them up continue to attempt to hide their shameful acts, but the Cove Guardians continue to expose them.

There was quite the scene at the park (yes, the Cove is a public park) while this drama unfolded. Even the mayor of Taiji stopped by for a visit for it is election time. He would not talk to us and ran (scared perhaps) from a 17-year-old girl. Private Space, Sour Suji, and some other molesters were hanging out too. They “love” having their photographs taken so we decided to accommodate them. It was comical watching these pathetic excuses for men bob and weave in vain attempts to elude our cameras.

Several dolphins have been transported out of the Taiji harbor pens over the past two days, but many more remain imprisoned there. Those taken are destined for some of the very same parks represented at this IMATA conference. Check out the new video on the November 9 update. You can see how much these trainers love the dolphins. I guess you can love something to death.

Two new Cove Guardians have joined us. We welcome Heber, a Brazilian who currently lives in Japan and Matthew from France.  A group of German tourists stopped by today and were utterly appalled at what they witnessed. I expect we will be hearing from them again.

Into the butcher houseInto the butcher houseKeep up the barrage on your own governments and the embassies and consulates of Japan the world over. We know they heard about the capture and slaughter in Taiji today before the townspeople of Taiji learned of it.  Keep it up for you are making the difference.   Every time dolphins are pushed into the Cove, let them have it. Every time there is blood in the water, let them have it. Do not grow weary for you are being heard. Together we will see an end to the slaughter of whales and dolphins in Japan and by Japanese crews the world over.

In addition, continue to make good consumer choices. If Japanese corporations see enough of a loss of market share over this, they too will put pressure on their government.  This whole business is absurd. Notice the Mitsubishi Corporation logo proudly displayed on the molester’s boat.

Japan has the history, academic institutions, technical savvy, and motivation to lead the world in marine conservation. Why does this government instead insist on making Japan the pariah of the modern world?

It is unfortunate that the reputation of an entire nation is being tarnished by the evil and shameful deeds of a handful of men and women in Taiji. To join us (voluntarily, and completely at your own cost and risk) in Taiji, write to me at inform-us@seashepherd.org. I will get back to you, but please be patient. I cannot keep an eye on the Cove and answer email at the same time. Contributions to Sea Shepherd to keep our official presence here are needed and welcome. I am the current official Sea Shepherd representative and will be replaced by Michael Dalton when I leave on December 9, 2010.
