Report from Taiji: September 23 (new video)

At dawn this morning, the trainers were lined up on the beach awaiting their opportunity to do their dirty business hidden away in the killing cove.  The “fishermen” soon drove the dolphins deep into the killing cove and ferried the trainers in.  Eight times the skiffs left the cove with dolphins in slings and carried them over to the pens in Taiji Harbor; as many as 16 dolphins were forced into a lifetime of slavery by these trainers.  The trainers have as much blood on their hands as do the men who butchered the Pilot Whales and Risso Dolphins earlier this week.

Once the selection was completed, the nets came down and the remnants of the pod were driven out to sea.  We now estimate that 30 or more dolphins were originally captured and so about half their number were torn from the group.  While we can appreciate that the unselected dolphins were not slaughtered this time, we call upon the end of all capture operations and call upon everyone to not patronize dolphinariums and swim with dolphin programs.

We need your help now more than ever.  Spread the word, send donations, join in the protest, and if at all possible, come join us here in Taiji.  To join us (voluntarily, and completely at your own cost and risk) in Taiji, write to me at inform-us@seashepherd.org.  I will get back to you, but please be patient.  I cannot keep an eye on the Cove and answer email at the same time.

There is an international day of protest on October 14, 2010, where you will have an opportunity to let the Japanese government know how you feel.

Sea Shepherd organized the first couple of these protests.

Follow my daughter’s blog of these events.

Tarah Millen will be joining us here in November.  She has started a blog about her endeavor.
