Sea Shepherd Conservation Society - New York City Chapter
The New York City chapter was formed in May 2010 and has since created an extensive outreach and fundraising program that is one of Sea Shepherd USA’s most active. Averaging between 20 and 30 days of events each year, the NYC chapter hosts documentary screenings, tables at events such as festivals and rock concerts, and organizes beach clean-ups, bake sales, and major fundraisers. Some chapter highlights have included our “Light Up the Night with Captain Paul Watson” fundraiser in 2012 and our 2013 “Waves of Change” benefit art show. Each August, we host our annual “S'more Protection for the Oceans” fundraiser, which features a social gathering and raffle with dozens of donated prizes —and yes, we make and serve vegan s'mores.
Each of our volunteers brings a unique perspective and skill set to the chapter, but we all share a common desire to use our knowledge to protect the oceans and to meet new people who share our collective passion and who will help our chapter grow. Several NYC chapter volunteers have also participated in our dolphin defense campaign in Taiji, Japan, Operation Infinite Patience as Cove Guardians since the 2011 campaign (it began in 2010) and in the Dam Guardians sea lion defense campaign on the Columbia River in 2013.
